What began as a simple favor for a friend has blossomed into a full‑time entrepreneurial journey for Mariam Dass, founder of MD Unique Delights. Dass recalls baking her first black cake at Christmas without ever imagining it would spark a passion that would lead to her own business.
The name of her venture reflects her vision: “MD” stands for Mariam Dass’ Unique Delights, with “unique” symbolizing her determination to go beyond traditional cakes and introduce new creations to Guyana’s dessert scene.

Though self‑taught in baking, Dass pursued formal training in cake decoration at Carnegie School of Home Economics, balancing her studies with a full‑time job. Eventually, the demands of baking and her growing desire to invest in her craft led her to resign from her job in 2024 and commit fully to her business.
Her leap of faith paid off. Dass has showcased her products at exhibitions such as Uncap and GMC expos, where she learned the importance of presentation and sampling. She recalls selling out her offerings and receiving overwhelming support from customers and colleagues.

Despite challenges like transportation, lack of a permanent storefront, and building confidence on social media, Dass remains motivated by her support system and her drive to keep learning. She has already expanded her product line to include ice cream and plans to introduce ice cream cakes, éclairs, and other pastries.
Looking ahead, Dass envisions MD Unique Delights with multiple branches across Guyana, employing staff and reaching new communities. She describes her journey in one word: amazing. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet powerful: “Open yourself to options, try new things, and take a leap of faith. Believe in yourself and advertise your business—it will grow.”
